Welcome To Kathryn Tappen.com
Kathryn Tappen knew her career aspiration
at an early age: in her 8th grade yearbook profile she listed “Newscaster”.
A
native of Morristown, New Jersey, Kathryn grew up playing several sports
for school and her town including basketball, softball, cross country and
track and field. Kathryn was also an accomplished public speaking champion
winning awards for her oratorical skills, including one in Spanish.
Kathryn’s love of sport and competition led her to attend Rutgers
University where she was a member of the Scarlet Knights Cross Country
and Track and Field teams. She is a six-time Varsity letter winner, Academic
All American, Big East Academic All Star, and the former holder of the
school record in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase. Kathryn graduated
with honors from the School of Communications at Rutgers University, with
a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies.
Kathryn began pursuing her profession through work with ABC Sports and
ESPN, but her big break occurred when she entered and ultimately won the
inaugural College Sports Television Walk-On Sportscaster tryouts. While
at CSTV, Kathryn hosted "The One College Sports Show," "At
the Buzzer", “24/7” and "First Person," and
interviewed celebrities for major Hollywood films covered by CSTV.
In February 2005, Kathryn joined the Sports Team at NBC Channel 10 in
Providence, Rhode Island as the weekend sports anchor and weekday sports
reporter, covering high school, college, and professional teams. In 2006
Kathryn’s work was recognized with a nomination for a New England
Emmy Award for Best Sports Feature or Segment for her feature on “A
Day in Remembrance”. She also served as a sideline reporter for NBC
Universal Sports, notably for NBC’s National Heads-Up Poker Championship
in Las Vegas and hosted a nightly special covering the 2006 Winter Olympic
Games. Kathryn has also been awarded with an Associated Press Award for
her feature “Swim Meet”.
In August 2006, Kathryn began her current position at the New England
Sports Network (NESN) in Boston as the weekend anchor and weekday reporter
for SportsDesk, the network’s daily sports news, information and
highlights program. Kathryn’s coverage includes the New England Patriots,
Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics as well as New England colleges
and high schools.
